Though the electrical guitar has came from blues music, it is rock that gave its acclaim. With rock music, the electrical guitar turned into a tremendously expressive instrument. Shapes You Should Know When You Learn Guitar Chords

Guitar is probably one of the easiest instruments you can learn to play reasonably well in a short period of time. In my 2 decades as a teacher I have seen how my students got to play in no time at all by just following a simple but effective system.

On the guitar we have the CAGED system that allows us to use five open chord shapes - C, A, G, E, and D - to get all the other chords. We are dealing with chords and scales shapes and not notes per se. As a matter of fact many guitar players are not aware of which notes they are pressing, all they need - and want - to know is where to put that specific shape.

If you want to learn guitar chords you just need to learn a few shapes. These are the most important ones:

"Open Chords" are the most simple ones but yet some of the most effective. Just because this is where everybody starts from doesn't mean that they are less important once you progress in your playing. On the contrary they are extremely used by professional guitar players of all styles for their unique sound, due mostly to the fact that open chords make use of open strings as well as pressed notes.

"Barre' Chords" are also extremely popular because they allow you to play any possible chord. The problem with them is that they are a bit harder to play at first but give them some time and keep practicing, you'll soon have them under your belt. The most popular are the A & E shapes barre' chords.

"Power Chords" are the work horse in many styles of music, Blues, Rock, Pop you name it. Many memorable guitar riffs make use of power chords as their backbone and they sound amazing on both acoustic and electric guitars. The other great thing about power chords is that they are extremely simple to play, one shape fits them all. Doesn't get better than that.

Obviously these are just guide lines and if you want to learn to play guitar chords properly I suggest you get yourself a good online course or tutorial. There's so much you can learn that random online guitar tutorials don't cut it in my opinion. Especially if you value your time, you should be learning from the right source without wasting too much time on chip advice.
