Singles: Life in the Seattle dating scene ain't simple. Energetic seriocomedy with some appealing performances (particularly by-Scott and Sedgwick), however by no means as enlightening as you wish it can be. Cast includes Bridget Fonda, Matt Dillon, Campbell Scott, Kyra Sedgwick, Sheila Kelley, Jim Real, Bill Pullman, James Le Gros, Devon Raymond, Camllo Gallardo, Friend Stroller, Jeremy Piven, Paul Giamatti, and Tim Burton. (99 minutes, 1992)

Last summer: Commanding tale based on Evan Hunter novel of adolescents playing on the shore in a summer resort. Cast includes Brendan Gleeson, Jon Voight, Adrian Dunbar, Sean McGinley, Maria Doyle Kenoedy, Angeline Ball, and Eamonn Owens. (124 minutes, 1998)

Great Guns: Later Laural and Hardy Army comedy is weak, not as poor as some although far underneath their classic films. Cast includes Stan Laurel, Oliver Hardy, Sheila Ryan, Dick Nelson, and Edmund MacDonald. (74 minutes, 1941)

Nutcracker the Motion Picture: Much of this rendition of The Nutcracker, acted by the Pacific Notthwest Ballet, is like a music video with rapid cutting and close-ups of legs, faces, and elbows. This is extremely irritating. However the Tchaikovsky music is, obviously, amazing, as are Maurice Sendak's sets and costumes. Cast includes Hugh Bigney, Vanessa Acute" Patricia Barker, Plod Walthall, Russell Burnett, and the voice of Julie Harris. (89 minutes, 1986)

Blink: Did she or didn't she see a murderer leaving the scene of the crime? That's the main query while gorgeous and strong willed musician Stowe, who is blind. Tale depends on viewer's acceptance of screenwriter's gimmick of "retroactive vision," a post-surgery reaction. Best thing in film is Stowe; alternatively this strolls onto the too recognizable blind-female-in-danger region. Cast includes Madeleine Stowe, Aidan Quinn, Laurie Metcalf, James Remar, Peter Friedman, Bruce A. young, Matt Roth, and Paul Dillon. (105 minutes, 1994)

China Gate: Global cadets under French instruct assault a Socialist munitions area in Indochina. Cast includes Gene Barry, Angie Dickinson, Nat Emperor Cole, Paul Dubov, Lee Van Cleef, George Givot, and Marcel Dalio. (97 minutes, 1957)

Trade: A thirteen-year-old gal is kidnapped by members of a sex-trafficking ring. As her older sibling follows her track, he hooks up with a Texas cop (Kline) who has his own rationales for chasing this outfit of bad guys. Downbeat drama reveals a stunning, debasing circumstance, although it's maddeningly choppy, one second daring and commanding (particularly with Finnish actress Bachleda) and the next remarkably corny. Cast includes Kevin Kline, Alicia Bachleda, Paulina Gaitan, Kathleen Gati, Pasha D. Lychnikoff, Anthony Crivello, Linda Emond, Zack Ward, Cesar Ramos, Marco Perez, and Tim Reid. (120 minutes, 2007)

Hoop Dreams: Magnificent documentary follows 2 Chicago central-city kids (Arthur Agee and William Bars), who have fantasies of basketball stardom, over 4 years' time. This quaint and immersing film plays like drama, not documentary, with the exception of that it takes spontaneous twists and turns no author might create. The film presents a scorching commentary on our school system, the indomitable power of the family, and the uncertainty of life. (109 minutes, 1994)
