7 Paul McCartney Written Piano Based Tunes With The Beatles

By Jason R. Bohener

Perhaps it's because of Paul McCartney's idolization of Little Richard that he started playing in some of The Beatles songs but unlike Little Richard, The Beatles usually used piano for ballads (although there is "Lady Madonna" which is certainly not a ballad.) This article is a look at seven Beatles songs which feature a piano as the main instrumentation.

"Hey Jude" was one of The Beatles longest songs and it was also one of their most popular. To this day it remains one of their most listened to songs (just check the Last.FM website for proof) and it's certainly one of the most obvious examples of a piano based Beatles song.

"Let It Be" is currently the most played Beatles song according to the Last.FM music site. Obviously this is a song that has a timeless quality to it. The piano part that McCartney plays for this song is quite simple and I think that's part of it's charm. Another great element of this beautiful song is the gorgeous guitar solo by George Harrison.

"The Long & Winding Road" is a pretty ballad that was overblown by Phil Spector's over the top production on the version released in 1970. The more stripped back version heard on Let It Be... Naked allows you to hear McCartney's true intention for this song (and lets you hear the piano that's pretty much drowned out in the Spector version.) I really like the little organ solo on the stripped down version.

"For No One" featured not only McCartney on piano but also a french horn and a harpsichord. This beautifully sad song is one of my favorites on Revolver, and considering what an amazing album that is, that's saying quite a lot.

"The Fool on the Hill" is a rather quirky tune which includes piano but certainly has many other sounds in there as well (the flutes stand out in particular.)

"Lady Madonna" was another hit song based on the piano (it hit #1 in the UK in the US) for The Beatles. I would say it's amazing how many of The Beatles piano based songs became hits but really that's just par for the course for them. And, oh yeah, the melody for this song became a hit again in the 1990s for the band Sublime ("What I Got.")

"Good Day Sunshine" is another great piano based tune from The Beatles awesome 1966 album Revolver. Along with the piano licks (which are really a good time) I also really enjoy the inventive drumming on this track. Show some love for Ringo Starr. - 18423

Billy and Elton: One Awesome Show

By James G. Pynn

The concert of a lifetime comes, well -- once in a lifetime. To that end, it would be tantamount to a crime to not get the word out that as you are reading this little bit of hullabaloo, Elton John and Billy Joel are on the same ticket and rocking in the free world. That's right -- on the same bill and even joining forces for some killer encores. Even if you are not a huge fan of what is now called "classic rock" you will definitely enjoy this audio and visual extravaganza.

The summer of 2009 is in full swing and as the nights get longer, the rocking gets louder. Behold, the rock gods are on the loose and Saturday night is all right for high-five-ing. If there was any doubt, you can be sure these men have not faded softly into middle-aged rock flaccidity. No sir. Billy and Elton are in fine form and belting them out better than ever. Just check out your local arena and feel the power.

Hey, wait a minute -- is it already the Fourth of July? Kind of -- but what you are witnessing is Billy and Elton blasting the roof off of Wrigley Field. Not only are you guaranteed to have the tuna salad rocked out of you, but never forget these giants bring with them a formidable pyrotechnics display. That's the kind of combined firepower legendary concerts are made of. Not since chocolate and peanut butter has there been a better combining of forces.

The analogy of this being some kind of cosmic alignment is not too far-fetched. How often do two rock gods jump on the same ticket? The Rocket Man meets the Piano Man. Forget about it. All the major cities are on the slate for these rock and roll generals as they bring in the noise to North America. This is truly a once-in-a-lifetime event. Don't disappoint your grandchildren, instead give them a great story and book your tickets.

Don't wait until the last minute and hit up the scalpers for tickets five-times their worth. Just book your tickets online, securely and worry about something more important -- like finding a good parking spot. You would be better off commuting, if possible. Either way, without a set of sweet tickets there's no point to even showing up. Get you tickets and get your rock on before the shows all over. - 18423
