What You Have Know About Buying A Synthesizer

By Brady Carlson

Perhaps you are good at composing and playing music. You have a real talent and are keen on making a career as a musician. Naturally you want to play your own compositions. You might be a drummer, a guitarist or you may prefer to use a synthesizer. You might have learned to play an instrument of your choice quite well. But unless you understand your instrument thoroughly you will never make the grade a good professional musician.

If you settle on buying a synthesizer you must first learn about the instrument. You should be knowledgeable about its parts and features, the various brands that are available, and their prices. Let us consider how best to go about buying a synthesizer.

First of all, the synthesizer is one of the most expensive instruments that you can own. That said, you will want to weigh carefully the factors relating to learning, playing and composing on it.

Here are some decisions that you will need to make as you look at synthesizers: will you be using it to record in a studio or will you be playing it for your personal enjoyment; do you want an analog or digital synthesizer; do you want a classical synthesizer or a software synthesizer that you can program with high profile sounds; and, importantly, what is your budget.

Synthesizers are expensive but you should not try to economize and go for low priced ones. Low end models may not meet your requirements. Also, the low cost ones may not last long or give you the kind of performance you desire. Very often cheap synthesizers do not have a good keyboard and may lack several other necessary functions. It would be wise to select a synthesizer that is moderately priced.

So it's important to really listen to any synthesizer you're thinking of buying. Select a store with a knowledgeable salesperson, or better yet bring an expert with you. The sound needs to be appropriate for the style of music you're going to be playing. Compare and don't just buy the first one that sounds good to you.

Once you know what kind of synthesizer you want, you may consider buying a used instrument. If you decide an old synthesizer, examine it very carefully to satisfy yourself about its working condition at every level. Take particular care to check that the sound quality is not variable. Unlike a guitar or a violin, the sound quality of synthesizers does not improve with age. If the batteries are damaged the display may flicker. Make sure that every part of it is in good order.

If you are an experienced musician and composer, you may want to acquire a synthesizer workstation. This is essentially a synthesizer with a built-in sequencer, many polyphonic voices, a drum kit, and additional special effects. This is equivalent to purchasing an entire studio system in one instrument. Best of luck! - 18423

By Mike Jones

Hi Mike here from Killer Guitar Tips.

I am now going to show you a couple of mini guitar lessons in this article that you really should know to help get your guitar soloing of to a great start and stop you from sounding shall we say mediocre!

OK, let;s get started...

In this weeks mini guitar lesson I will show you how to use the pentatonic pattern #1 scale for both major and minor solo's.

The first thing we need to understand is that every pentatonic pattern can be used for major and minor scales.

Taking pattern #1 at the fifth fret, the two keys are A minor (Am) and Cmajor (C). We call this the relative major and minors.

Therefore to get a real cool bluesy rock sound and knowing that we can use this pattern for BOTH minor and major keys, Am and C maj, we simply play the Am pattern over a backing track written in A major!

Now here's the really cool part...

Using the very same pattern, move the whole pattern down the neck (towards the tuning pegs) 3 frets and play the very same pattern, this will put you in A major which will produce a melodic, tuneful soloing sound!!!

This next little mini guitar lesson staying with the theme of moving the pentatonic pattern 1 around the neck creating killer solo's.

If we play in the key of A by playing pattern 1 at the 5th fret (Am) we can create a really cool bluesy rock solo.

Now here is a killer tip, move the whole pattern up the neck 7 frets (Em) and continue playing! This will give you a cool melodic sound using the same pattern - try it, it's a mainstay in all killer guitarists soloing!

For future reference create a space or folder on your hard drive for all the mini guitar lessons I will be submitting in forthcoming articles. Over time you will build a nice little archive of 'must have' tips and tricks to be used in your soloing that will produce a really professional sound. Your friends, colleagues and family will be amazed at your new found skill!

Remember these mini guitar lessons are just a very small fraction of what you will receive if you subscribe to my killer guitar course, that will be released shortly. - 18423
