So You Want a Classical Music Record Deal

By Arthur Cundy

Regardless of the genre of music that you play, every musicians dream is to one day have a record deal that will allow them to live their dream. If it was easy, every musician would be able to get one. However, if you are in search of getting a classical music record deal, there are some things that you can do to give yourself a better chance.

Before you do anything, you are going to have to put a quality demo together. If you want to be taken seriously, you need to get one that is done professionally. Many young artists are struggling financially, but you can share studio time or record during off hours. It is better to take a little more time and do it right that to put something together that is embarrassing.

The music is only one portion of the demo as you still need to make sure that the packaging is just as impressive as what is inside. You would be surprised at how many musicians do nothing more than throw something on a CD and stick it in a plain case to send off. Doing something like this screams that you don't really care and cannot be taken seriously.

There should also be a press kit included with everything that you are sending off to the record company. You will want them to have a little more than just your music to go on. Get a professional photo done, do a quick bio and list some of your musical accomplishments. If you have played on other albums or made appearances, this is exactly where it should be listed. A nice picture and some interesting information will go a long way to get you through the front door.

Choosing the labels that you want to solicit is the next step in the process. While you will definitely want to take your shot and send something to the major label's, don't limit yourself to just this. There are a lot of companies out there that work in conjunction with bigger labels in developing younger talent. If you start to blossom, they will sell your contract to the bigger labels to continue your rise to stardom.

Once all of this is together, you can finally start to contact companies to send them your demo. In real life, people do not just put something in the mail and hope that someone notices it. The record companies will not even look at something that they were not informed was coming so don't go about it that way. Take the time to call around get their permission to send in your tape.

There is quite a bit of work in trying to get a classical music record deal, but anything worth having is worth putting some effort into. If you are truly talented, all of the hard work you put into creating a sellable product (you and your music) will come to fruition in the way of a signed contract. Hopefully, this will get you well on your way to getting that deal. - 18423
