Yoga Music For Meditation Series - 12 Tips To Attain A Good Meditation Practice

By Hans Havasi

a) About Meditation

1. Understand meditation! Meditation is the flow of continuous thought on one thing. Meditation is the keeping up of one idea alone like the continuous flow of oil. Yogins call this Dhyana. Bhaktas call this adoration.

Concentration is to fix the mind on a point or an object, either internal as in the body or external (eg an image). Meditation is a natural outcome of concentration. In Dhyana the normal thoughts are closed of from the mind and the mind becomes saturated with Divine thoughts and presence.

(b) Finding The Place

2. Have a meditation room which you can lock off. Don't allow anyone to enter this room to keep it holy. Burn incense in the mornings and evenings. Keep an icon of God or your Guru. Put your chair in front of this icon. Also it is good to keep spiritual books there such as the Yoga Sutras and other spiritual scriptures.

When you are in deep meditation the powerful vibrations produced will be lodged in the ether of the room. In six months time you will feel a lot of peace and purity within the atmosphere of the room. Whenever your mind is disturbed by worldly events, sit in the room and repeat a Mantra for half an hour; you will find that a change will take place within your mind immediately.

Practice and feel the soothing spiritual influence it will have on yourself. Nothing compares to spiritual Sadhana. It will create a sacred place in your own house.

3. Intensive meditation and solitude are of utmost importance for realizing the Divine Self. A place of pilgrimage, a mountainous scenery, a garden full of flowers, a sacred temple, these are places which help to the attaining of concentration, contemplation and meditation. Find these places when you need to.

4. A cool place with a mild climate is a must for concentrating the mind. As salt will melt in water, the pure mind melts in the silence brought in through meditating upon the Absolute.

(c) Find A Time

5. Pull yourself out of bed at 4 in the morning! This time is favourable for spiritual and devotional practice. The mind is pure and calm in the mornings after having slept. Like a blank sheet of paper, it is void of the normal worldly impressions.

The mind is easily moulded at this hour as the atmosphere is filled with light and purity. If you do not feel to take a bath or shower you can wash your hands, feet and your face with cold water. This suffices.

6. Find a part of the day or night where your mind is clear and you will not get disturbed. The mind is calmer and more malleable at this time.

7. You can enjoy the results of a good meditation on Sundays because this is a holiday, and the mind feels free. Therefore you should do some vigorous meditations on Sundays. Meditation results will also improve when you live on milk and fruits alone or when you fast. Use common sense and try to obtain the best results in meditation.

(d) Place of Concentration

8. Keep your attention fixed in the area of the heart or in the middle of the forehead and keep your eyes shut.

9. The seat of your mind is Ajna Chakra at Trikuti. The mind can be easily controlled if you concentrate on Trikuti. Bhaktas (devotees) should concentrate on the heart. Yogins should concentrate on Ajna Chakra.

10. At the top of the head there is an energy center called Sahasrara which is another great place to concentrate. Vedantins focus in this point. Some yogis focus on their nose tips (Nasikagra Drishti). Tenaciously stick to one place of focus for the quickest results.

If you decide to concentrate on the heart area, stay with it and don't change it. If you are a devotional type you can let your guru find the center you should focus upon, else you can find it yourself.

(e) What to eat

11. Keep your diet pure and light. To fill up the stomach with rice, bread and vegetables will make you very sleepy and will interfere with your sadhana. A diet of milk keeps the body light, pure and alert.

You can sit in one Asana for hours at a time with ease and comfort. If you feel weak, you can eat a little rice and milk or barley and milk or any aliments found in a light diet. Those who are in the field of service and who give lectures and perform other intense spiritual activities need solid, substantial food.

(f) Yoga Postures

12. Yoga positions (Asanas) make the body more stable. Contractions (Bandhas) and inner attitudes (Mudras) will make the mind more strong. Breathing exercises (Pranayama) will make the body feel lighter. Purification of the energy paths (Nadi suddhi) will give you steadiness of mind. Once these things have been attained you can fix your mind on the Divine. Meditation will in this way become easy and you will find yourself in states of uplifted bliss.

It is highly recommended to practice the lotus pose (Padmasana) or Siddhasana for the attainment of meditation and concentration. For health it is good for you to be sexually continent. This can be attained through Paschimottanasana, Matsyasana, Brahmacharyasana, Sarvangasana and Shirshasana (amongst many other Asanas). - 18423

How To String A Guitar - Recommending Reading - 5 Tips

By Jon J Tan

Changing the guitar string is a very important step in learning how to maintain your guitar. There is no reason why you should pay somebody to string a guitar for you when you can do it yourself easily. Changing a guitar string is a very straightforward process and the risk of damaging your guitar is very low. Here are 5 tips to help you do it correctly:

1. Buy the right guitar string. Different guitars use different kinds of strings made out of different materials. Using the wrong kind of strings can result in permanent damage to your guitar. Acoustic and electric guitars use metal based strings while classical guitars use nylon strings.

2. Take note of the tension of the string. If you are just starting out, you should start with using strings of lower tension. The tension is also known as the "gauge" of the string and is often indicated as such on the package. Higher gauge strings usually have higher tension. If you are a beginner, I highly recommend using a lower tension string as it is less taxing on your fingers.

3. Do change your guitar strings one at a time. It is recommended that you change the strings one at a time, rather than removing all the strings before replacing them with new ones. This will help preserve the tension of the guitar neck and wood, reducing the possibility of damage to your precious instrument.

4. Buy a string winder. A string winder will significantly cut down the time to string a guitar and is a valuable tool for any budding guitarist. If you want to get back to playing as soon as possible, it is best to use a string winder.

5. Cutting your strings. You should cut your strings to the right length only after the strings are on the guitar and are fully tuned up to the correct pitch and tension. It is possible that the strings will slip slightly and if you cut too early the string might just slip off the guitar! - 18423

iPod Battery guide for your iPod Nano

By James Logan

iPod battery life is an important consideration to most iPod users. Once an iPod battery wears out, it is not easily replaceable by users. Although it can be recharged more than 300 times, the lithium based battery does eventually wear out.

Moreover, because the iPod battery is soldered to the iPod Nano 8GB case, many people that own the device would rather not attempt to change the battery themselves. This caused some users to wonder if the iPod Nano 8GB was intended as a disposable MP3 player? No. Users expect the iPod Nano 8GB to last a long time.

The lifespan of the iPod battery is just a couple of years, as it is lithium based. This nets the user hundreds of charges; however, at some point, the lithium battery will not work. An iPod battery is not designed for user replacement.

This is because the iPod battery is soldered into the iPod Nano 8GB case. This created a wide open marketplace for third party manufacturers to offer an iPod battery replacement kit, including detailed instructions on how to remove and replace the battery in the iPod Nano 8GB. Apple also offers to change the iPod battery, but users have to send their iPod Nano 8GB to the company for replacement.

Users may also be interested in how to make their iPod battery last longer; tips can be found on the Apple website. The following tips and tricks will ensure your iPod battery will last longer: An iPod battery operates at its best when the iPod Nano 8GB is at room temperature, between 0 to 35 C (or 32 to 95 F).

Do not leave your iPod Nano 8GB inside a car. You should never expose your iPod Nano 8GB to direct sunlight. When unattended, Press the Pause. Any time you are not using your iPod Nano 8GB, slide the button into the Hold position.

Your iPod will continue to play if the hold button is not pressed. This can significantly impact the life of your iPod battery. Only use the back lighting feature when you really need it.

Back lighting can use up a lot of your reserved battery power. Turn off back lighting unless using it is absolutely needed. Select Settings, Back light Timer, Off. Most people don't realize that even when their iPod Nano isn't in use, the battery is still active.

While your iPod Nano 8GB is sleeping, the battery is still fully awake, and loses a small amount of current. Storing your iPod at room temperature will help to conserve the battery. By doing this, the battery in your iPod can last as long as 28 days. - 18423

You Need To Pay For Legal Music Downloads

By John Roberts

Millions of people download music from the internet but we all need to be careful that these are legal music downloads. It is easy to be tempted to download music for free on peer-to-peer sites but this practice can lead to a very massive legal headache and fines in the thousands of dollars range.

Since the music industry is losing million of dollars through piracy and that they have successfully won several battles, they are taking notice of who is doing what out there in cyber space. They have the money and the time to go after the worst offenders. Several counts of piracy may not seem like a big deal but when you consider that every original download is one count and every upload is one count of piracy, the numbers can start to skyrocket.

Although most piracy cases are settled out of court, people are still looking at fines that can range well over the thousand dollar mark. The initial suits are for millions of dollars and that scares most people into settling their cases. There is the possibility of paying thousands of dollars for just one popular song that you may have.

However, in today's economy who can afford several thousands of dollars in fines and court costs? The benefit of paying for a song or album is that once you pay for the music, it is yours. You can do whatever it is that you want to do with it. Most of the music sites have taken care of the DRM restrictions so that their customers do have to worry about what happens after the purchase.

Most people only want a track or two off of an album, so you are looking at cost of $0. 99 to $1. 29 per track. This is not a moral decision. By paying for your music upfront you could be saving yourself a lot of money.

They have a legal foothold to sue those that do have legal music downloads. According to the piracy laws, when people used to record music onto a cassette from the radio, they had a right to sue. They just did not have a way to track the people that were doing it and the music industry just had to accept the loss.

Since the age of the internet, everyone can be found sooner or later. So, it is best to pay for legal music downloads now. You are getting the better deal when you consider the alternative. - 18423
