Browsing For A Wonderful Movie? Check Out These Impressive Movie Critiques

By Jamey Lee

The ambition of every Hollywood producer is to put out a movie that is a huge hit. The combination of a fantastic story line with tremendous actors and special effects seems to be the formula for a epic. In spite of this, it doesn't always work and sometimes even when a movie has all of the elements that allegedly make a hit, it still fails at the box office. There is no definite formula for a Hollywood sensation.

Lantana - Heartbreaking, mature storyline of relationships obstructed by monotony, routine, and absence of articulation. LaPaglia plays a cop, whose marriage has stagnated, leading him to have an affair. In the mean time, he investigates the disappearance of a lady whose own marriage is in danger. The film is beautifully nuanced at every turn. Cast includes Anthony LaLaglia, Geoffrey Hurry, Barbara Hershey, Kerry Armstrong, Rachael Blake, Vince Colosimo, Daniela Farinacci, and Peter Phelps. (121 minutes, 2001)

My Son the Hero - Epic movie in regards to sinister Emperor Cadmus of Thebes, who challenges the lords and faces the fury of the Titans. Cast includes Pedro Armendariz, Jacqueline Sassard, Antonella Lualdi, and Giuliano Gemma. (122 minutes,'62)

Cry the Beloved Country - Moving redo of the'51 film based on Alan Paton's rejoiced book, in reference to a backwoods pastor (Jones) who, in'46, makes his first ever trip to the city of Johannesburg in search of his wayward child. At the same time well-to-do landowner Harris voyages there to claim the body of his child, who has just been murdered. We see exceptional work by Jones, Harris, and a largely foreign cast. Not as understated as the first making, however powerful in its own way. Cast includes Richard Harris, James Earl Jones, Charles S. Dutton, and Vusi Kunene. (120 minutes,'95)

Sexy Beast - A retired British gangster, living the life in Spain, is visited by a fierce gangster who desires him to work one more heist. Trendy, aggressive, current day gangster's film has tremendous acting containing a special performance by Kingsley as the malicious perpetrator. Cast includes Ray Winstune, Ben Kingsley, Ian McShane, Cavan Kendall, Julianne White, Alvaro Monje, and James Fox. (88 minutes, 2001)

Fantasies - Amateurish gibberish in regards to Derek's and Hooten's attempts to turn a Greek island into a tourist trap. Shot in'73, while Bo was sixteen. Cast includes Bo Derek, Peter Hooten, Anna Alexiadis, Phaedon Gheorghitis, and Therese Bohlin. (81 minutes,'81)
