The Celebrated Artist's From Hollywood's Golden Era

By Gilbert Lawson

The American Film Institute promoted a register of the top 50 actors from American cinema back in 1999. These are the actors from the golden times of Hollywood, the ones that started it all. While lots of of today's stars may have eclipsed their talent, they are all the same always going to be remembered.

The list begins out with the legendary Humphrey Bogart. Humphrey Bogart acted in 75 motion pictures beginning in the 1930's and up to the 1950's. His most prominent role was probably the role of Rick Blaine in one of the most popular films of all times, "Casablanca". He was born on Christmas day, December 25, 1899. He died on January 14, 1957 from cancer of the esophagus.

Following him on the register is Cary Grant, born Archibald Alexander Leach on January 18, 1904. Died November 29, 1986. Number 3 on the register is Jimmy Stewart, born James Maitland Stewart on May 20, 1908, passed away July 2, 1997. Jimmy Stewart played in the beloved Christmas timeless that is still much-loved nowadays, "It's a Wonderful Life".

In the number 4 spot is Marlon Brando, Jr. He was born on April 3, 1924 and he died on July 1, 2004. The famous dancer, Fred Astaire, born Frederick Austerlitz on May 10, 1899 and passed away on June 22, 1987, is at the number 5 spot. Fred Astaire's movie career spanned seventy-six years, and he made thirty-one musical pictures. There were 10 motion pictures made with Ginger Rogers, the cohort with whom he is most often linked.

At number six on the listing, there is Henry Fonda. Henry was born May 16, 1905 and he passed away August 12, 1982. At number 7 on the catalog is the man who played the lead character in the picture with the top box office success of all times, Clark Gable. In 1937, he played Rhett Butler in the picture "Gone With The Wind".

James Cagney comes in on the list at the place of number 8, followed by Spencer Tracy. Spencer Tracy had a extensive and flourishing career and along with his long-time love Katharine Hepburn, who is number one on the list of AFI's top actresses, he was part of one of the most lucrative screen pairings in big screen history.

The only player from the silent film age to make the catalog comes in at number ten. Charlie Chaplin began his illustrious career back in 1916, before the days of "talking" movies. His first true "talking" motion picture came about in 1940, "The Great Dictator".

Preferred actors, actresses and films will always be individual. One and all has a diverse opinion. But the actors on the inventory of the American Film Institute's top 50 stars certainly made their mark on film history. - 18423
