What The Most Commonly Used Movie Ratings Denote

By Corey Andrews

Movies have forever had a rating system to use as a guide to let individuals or parents know if a motion picture is proper for specific spectators. Many times it is used to shelter children from unsuitable violence or sexual scenes. Many people have disagreed with the ratings of various movies and there has even been copyright violation cases where a company deliberately removed scenes from movies that they deemed improper even though the movie had a good rating.

Since movies are all so unique it is exceptionally grueling to maintain a standard that holds accurate for every single picture. And then there are the different things that people find offensive. One person may consider that a solitary naked scene depicting possible sexuality is disgusting, while another may believe violence or a suicide by gunshot scene to be more offensive. Various people have different concerns when it comes to what they judge is proper to see at a movie.

The system for rating movies is based upon theme and content. Parents and individuals should take their own liability and conclude for themselves. The rating system is just a guide and it should not be relied upon fully.

The G rating is suitable for General audiences, or generally everyone. There is not sexual or nude scenes, no swearing, drug or alcohol use, no cigarette smoking or violence.

PG suggests parental guidance. There may be passing moments of the aforesaid scenes but not any are disproportionate. Parents are just cautioned that the scenes may be there. PG-13 is a stronger parental guidance caveat. This is usually a movie that is not enough to merit an R rating but appropriate for a PG-13 either. These movies are meant for children over the age of 13 with parental supervision. There is doubtless nudity or implied sexuality and/or violence.

An R movie restricts anybody under 17 to enter without the accompaniment of an adult guardian or parent. There are regularly sexual scenes, drug abuse or violence. Parents should be encouraged to watch the movies in advance and decide carefully if the movie is suitable.

The most recent rating is an NC-17. No one under the age of 17 is admitted into the theater to see these movies. These movies are not often pornographic but they do contain adult content, either sexual or even violence beyond what is appropriate for anyone below the age of 17.

Parents and individuals need to take liability for their own decisions on which movies are apt. The ratings system is just a broad guide and should not be relied upon wholly. - 18423
