Play this pattern with this picking: (B)down up down; (E)up down up. If you can't do it at 80BPM, then lower your metronome until you can do it smooth and clean.
The above factors may be acceptable to students with musical aspirations but not to the recreational guitar player. In fact there are more people who want to play the guitar as a recreation.
