Scotland, Vacations With A Difference
Scotland offers the best countryside in Great Britain making it a highly popular holiday destination. Countless visitors to Scotland decide upon the City of Edinburgh as their main destination, while some choose something a bit different. This article takes a look at vacations in Scotland and a selection of things to do while in Scotland. I also introduces the Wickerman Festival.
With such an immensely diverse countryside the range of things to do is endless. Climbing mountains is highly popular, as are mountain biking vacations. The most common holidays are fishing or golf. With Scotland being the birthplace of golf it should not surprise you that that you are never too distant from a minimum of one world class golf course. With the Rivers Tweed, Tay and Spey you are guaranteed of an excellent day fishing. But what if you fancy an altogether different vacation?
More and more of folk are making music festivals their yearly holiday. Although nearly all music festivals are huge with a focus on making cash, there exists a small number of family orientated music festival, such as Tartan Heart and the Wickerman Festival.
More of a music and arts festival, the annual Wickerman festival is held on a farm near the village of Dundrennan in Dumfries & Galloway roughly 5 miles from Kirkcudbright in Scotland. The event theme is the classic cult film, "The Wicker Man which features appearances by Edward Woodward, Christopher Lee, Ingrid Pitt, Britt Ekland and Diane Cilento.
The first festival took place in two thousand and two and was organized by local guy, Sid Ambrose. With no experience of arranging an event of such magnitude it is amazing that it still exists today, especially when you think about the present economic climate. The Wickerman Festival has altered slightly each year and has an almost cult following itself.
Wickerman is incredibly family friendly it has a great many child orientated activities including, numerous fairground rides, a mountain biking trek, workshops and face painting. This can be easily proven by searching for Wickerman Festival 2009 photos or simply pop along to the official Wickerman Festival Gallery.
Not too far from the site of the festival is Kirkudbright where you will find many locations used in the film for example Harbour Cottage (the bakery) and High Street Gallery which was used for the post office and sweetshop. You will find that there are many places worth visiting in Dumfries and Galloway and it is well worth having a short vacation here so that you can visit all of the tourist attractions. Popular places in which to stay include Castle Douglas and Dumfries. Scottish bed and breakfast is always top class and is also very reasonably priced and far less expensive than staying in a hotel. - 18423
