Introduction To Tantric Music

By Hans Havasi

Polarity In Tantra

In Tantra one of the fundamental principles is the principle of polarity. The universe has a masculine principle called Shiva and a feminine principle called Shakti.

The masculine principle (yang) is beyond the material world. It is spirit and essence. It represents the world of ideas and concepts. It is the yet to be manifested, the Word. Shakti (Yin) is the world, the universe, the material. It can be seen and touched. It is life itself.

If Shiva does not have his Shakti he is but sterile ideas with no body. If Shakti does not have Shiva she is wild and chaotic and follows no essence or plan.

Together they make the dance of creation, the dance of preservation and the dance of destruction.

Their dance takes place on all levels of existence. On the cosmic level this can be seen by galaxies (Shakti) revolving around black holes (Shiva), singularities in space/time.

The dance between Shiva and Shakti can be seen in the couple relationship and even in our own beings as the interplay between our awareness and our bodies.

Shiva is consciousness and Shakti is energy. Shiva is the mirror in which Shakti can see herself.

The Law Of Resonance

Another fundamental tantric teaching is the law of Resonance. As we stated above, the whole visible universe is Shakti, who is vibrating pulsating energy split up in an infinite range of frequencies.

Energy with one frequency will be attracted to other energies of the same frequency (the law of attraction).

Resonance also states that a system vibrating with a certain frequency will transfer data from another system vibrating with the same frequency.

Just to make an example: If you are a happy person you will transfer data from all the other people in the world who have transmitted happiness energies. All energies which have been emitted exist out there in the universe and make up a network of the "happy energies". This is a network you automatically join and start transferring from when you are happy!

A specific resonance of happiness can be transferred through different media. Music can give you that specific state of happiness, or a certain colour could do the same thing.

Listening to disharmonious music such as heavy metal will only amplify feelings of hatred and anger within you as you connect to the universal storehouse of anger and frustration as have so many angry heavy metal listeners.

Some say that you have to expose yourself to negative energies to become stronger. This may be true but only if you have the consciousness (Shiva) to go through it with awareness. Otherwise you will be overwhelmed and it will do you no good.

For the rest of us we should rather concentrate on what is good and noble and download those energies into our being!

The Tantric World

Tantrics study energy (Shakti) in order to understand the essence (Shiva) of that energy. In this study the world has been categorized into a large pantheon of Gods and Goddesses each being the lord of a specific range of frequencies or aspects of the universe.

For example, the energy of beauty encompass certain frequencies. We in the west would not need to have these energies represented by a Goddess. We would just call it beauty.

But deifying an energy has an important function: It enables us to identify easier with the energy as it gains a human face. It is easier to digest and to take in.

Only through identification with an object can you reach a complete understanding of it as you put yourself completely in its place.

A bija mantra is a sound which has the core vibration of the range of frequencies represented by a certain God or Goddess.

This sound or mantra is repeated silently inside the worshipper of the Goddess.

Tantra means "Network" as Tantra understands the universe as being a gigantic network of interconnected energies. Tantra is indeed a powerful tool with its huge range of Gods, Goddesses and Mantras enabling us to enter into processes of resonance with some core fundamental vibrations of the universe.

In this way we can identify with any aspect of the universe through mantras and resonance.

Tantric music

Music offers us a powerful way of getting into a resonance process.

The artist who enters into a specific resonance composes his music in that resonance and the listener who has the resonance awakened in himself will easily identify with that music.

It is in the artists interest to choose which energy he wants his audience to feel, because it enables him to consciously "soak" himself in that energy while creating his artwork and to transmit it to his audience through resonance.

The inspired artist submerges himself into the Bija of an uplifted energy, impregnates his art with it and thereby transmits this to the audience. In this way the artist is like a priest who conveys the divine to those who are able to receive. - 18423
