The Six Studio Albums Of Michael Jackson's Solo Career

By Marvin Markus

Michael Jackson released six studio albums during his adult solo career beginning with 1979's Off the Wall through 2001's Invincible. This article includes a short synopsis of each of these six albums and how they fit into his discography.

Off the Wall - This is the album that made Jackson a star on his own (without the rest of the Jacksons.) "Don't Stop 'til You Get Enough" and "Rock with You" were the first two tracks on the album and they were also both #1 singles. "Don't Stop 'til You Get Enough" was actually the only song on the album written by Jackson himself.

Thriller - This album made Michael Jackson the biggest pop star in the world. It's still the biggest selling album in the history of the world (and the biggest selling album in the United States as well.) It included two more #1 hits ("Billy Jean" & "Beat It") and an amazing seven top 10 singles. Since the album only had nine total songs that means all but two of it's songs were top 10 hits.

Bad - In some ways Bad was actually Jackson's most commercial successful album even though it's often overlooked in comparison with the monster success of Thriller. In what ways am I talking about? Well specifically it produced an amazing five #1 singles in the US including legendary hits like "Man in the Mirror" and the title track "Bad." The album should also be noted for the amount of songs that Jackson wrote: 8 of the 10 songs were penned by Jackson himself.

Dangerous - While it didn't sell as many copies as Thriller (of course no other album has either) or contain as many #1 singles as Bad, it was still an extremely successful album which included many MJ classics including the #1 single "Black or White," "Heal the World," "Remember the Time," "Give in to Me," & "Will You Be There."

HIStory - This album includes both a greatest hits collection (15 hits up through his previous album, Dangerous) and a disc of new 15 new songs including "You Are Not Alone," "Earth Song," "Stranger in Moscow," and a cover of The Beatles classic "Come Together." Although somewhat of a weak seller in comparison to Jackson's biggest hit albums, it still put up impressive sales numbers all over the world.

Invincible - MJ's final album (at least while still living) is considered to be his worst album by almost all music critics and most of his fans. But does that mean it has no redeeming qualities? No. It includes some excellent songs such as "Butterflies" & Threatened" and it featured the hit single "You Rock My World" which reached #10 in the US and #2 in the UK. - 18423
