History Of Epiphone Guitars

By Donald Claus

A musical instrument manufacturer that was established in 1873 and originally owned by Anastasios Stathopoulos is the Epiphone Company. They got their name from the combination of the nickname of proprietor Epaminondas Stathopoulo which is "Epi", and the Greek word "phone" which means sound. This company is known for creating lines of Epiphone Guitar.

Epiphone used to be the arch rival of Gibson, but later bought by Gibson in the 1950's when the company struggled during the aftermath of Second World War. Epiphone Company didn't just produce top of the line guitars, but they have also manufactured other string instruments, banjos and bass guitars.

The most famous model of Epiphone Guitar is the Epiphone Casino. This is an authentic hollow body electric guitar that can be used with P90 pickups. Gibson introduced this when they absorbed the company.

The Casino guitar was inspired by the form and composition of Gibson's ES-330 guitar. As a result of its thick sound when strummed, it produces a very strong sound that makes it a very good rhythm guitar. The famous people that were seen using the Epiphone Casino were The Beatles.

The first member that used Casino was Paul McCartney and soon followed by John Lennon and George Harrison. Paul McCartney used his Casino when he played solo for the song Taxman. It was said that The Beatles used Casino while recording Revolver and their following albums.

There are other famous guitarists from famous bands who still use an Epiphone Guitar on their performances, such as The Edge of U2, Nick Valensi of The Strokes, and Ace Frehley of Kiss. - 18423
